Good morning, my name is Jaydai Smith. In celebration of Women’s History Month, Winslow student government and Eagles Landing recognizes the following woman of distinction:
Bessie Coleman, aviation trailblazer
- Lived from 1892-1926
- Coleman was denied the right to learn to fly in the United States, so she decided to go to school in France to obtain her pilot’s license.
- In seven months, she successfully earned her license and returned to the States in 1921, where she created a media stir as the nation’s first Black female pilot. Coleman soon began performing in air shows, doing stunts before thousands of spectators.
- She used her celebrity to raise awareness of racial inequities in aviation. She even raised money to start a school to train African American aviators, hoping to afford them opportunities that were not then available in the U.S.
Bessie Coleman, a bold and courageous aviation trailblazer
