Boys Track
Apr 26, 2021
As with all other sports events, the WTHS Indoor Track Team had to make changes to meet pandemic restrictions and protocol. Also, unlike years past, this winter season had fewer students participating and thus no assigned captains. Brandon Green, a senior, served as the liaison and asset for conveying key information from Head Coach Custis. According to Coach Pino, “ the only seniors on the boys’ winter track squad were Daniel Johnson, who participated in field events, and Brandon Green who was a dual threat on the track.” Coach Pino adds that there were no records and “ winter track season was used as training to prepare for outdoors because all championship competitions were canceled for winter.” Unfortunately, this was another side -effect of the pandemic and very unfortunate for a team that had won the previous championship and were ready to win again when spring championship meet was cancelled last spring. Fortunately, the team did have the chance to travel about four times to the bubble at Toms River and compete in two outdoor polar meets. Pino noted that “Key game-changers were Brandon Green in the hurdles and Daniel Johnson who PR’d (person record) in the shot (a field event). Filling John Purvis’ shoes has been tough but Daniel is doing an amazing job right now.”
As far as key moments, the team was excited to pick up newcomers and potential sprinters, Jamil Peterson and Trey Thorpe, both former football players who lost the chance to compete in their championship game due to Covid-19. Coach Pino is anticipating the team will improve its outdoor time and measurements since he feels that “The team improved in their events throughout the season.”
