On January 26, 2023, the Spanish Honor Society inducted 19 new members into the National Spanish Honor Society.   These members are Alana Henry, A’zye Eichelberger, Bianca Silva, Brittney Caceres, Caltriana Haas, Favour Nyanjoh, Gianna Cavallero, Gilberto Morquecho-Leaza, Jada Lowe, Janaya Sharpe, Jariatou Diallo, Jolie Li, Jose Ortize, Monica Thai, Nicole Galvin, Taityonna Smith, Terry Harris, Tyasia Doyle, and Zainab Adeoye.

To qualify for this prestigious title, students had to complete 3+ years of a Spanish class, obtain an 88 or higher grade, show an understanding of the Spanish language, and be invited to the Honor Society.

The ceremony began in the auditorium at 6:00 pm with an introduction from 10th-grade vice principal Dr. Diggs.  This was followed up by the Spanish Honor Society’s co-president Debbie Akangbe reading opening remarks about the ceremony.  Winslow Township’s Mayor, Marie Lawrence,  spoke at the ceremony as well and commended all the current and incoming members for their achievements. The other co-president,  Hageo Martinez, then  introduced a video compilation after which a projector dropped down and started playing pre-recorded videos of the current members and inductees talking about what they gained from Spanish and their favorite lessons learned in class. The video was produced by Terry Harris and Malcom Smallwood. At the event, the current members of the Spanish Honor Society shared personalized blurbs in English and Spanish about each incoming member as they were called onto the stage. Annika Erickson, the Salutatorian for the Class of 2020,  was called up on the stage to give a speech about how the Spanish Honor Society and learning Spanish have contributed to her life’s achievements beyond high school. In her moving speech,  Erickson shared using her knowledge of the language to help Spanish patients in the medical profession she’s pursuing. The ceremony ended with all the inductees reciting the Spanish National Honor Society pledge while holding a candle. To end the event, parents, friends, and family were all escorted to the cafeteria and treated to catered Latin American food which included chicken, rice, empanadas, soup, and mashed potatoes. There was a photo booth for the family and the inductee to memorialize this special moment.

Congrats to all the new inductees! It was indeed a memorable experience for the families, friends, and members of the Spanish Honor Society.
