From the makers of last spring’s “Legally Blonde” comes another, equally exciting play. The Winslow Township High School hosted its Autumn Musical “The Outsiders” on November 16, 17, and 18, 2023 at 7:00pm, and as per usual with the Winslow Township High School Theater and Stage Crew the play was very enjoyable. The play was performed under the supervision of the following teachers: Mrs. Mulligan, Mrs. Shaw, and Mrs. Heffner. The “Outsiders” was the last fall play of some of the actors and actresses’ high school careers. Additionally, the same for the stage crew seniors. Many days, dedication, and practice went into this production, and it was clearly shown.
This play is based on the book of the same title made by S.E. Hinton. The synopsis of this story is that a Greaser named Ponyboy, played by senior Micah Govan, and his Greaser friends are harassed by the popular group Sous. His friend Johnny stands up for Ponyboy and ends up killing a Sous. This causes the two to go into hiding in a church. Trouble spurs when the church catches on fire, which kills Johnny
in the process as he sacrifices his life to save others. Ponyboy and the gang are distraught by this, but Ponyboy uses the event to start writing more in school. Despite troubles in the play when the fire alarm came on, temporarily, on the second night. Thus stopping the play for s ome time. The cast and crew did not let this moment deter them and continued showcasing the play to the best of their abilities.
This play is right for people who love emotional plays with just the right amount of humor. The raw emotion captivated the audience with the death of Johnny and Dallas bringing tears to some. However, they never failed to show humor with the antics of Dallas, such as when he poured water on another character. The actors truly embodied their characters and deserve all the applause. The time and effort put into the production can be surely seen. If you missed this play don’t worry! The next play is the musical “Beauty and the Beast”. This is sure to be a pleasant view for everyone, so free up your calendars in the spring and make sure to come watch this show!
