The Winslow Township Eagles captured their second straight state championship with a 34-21 win vs Ramapo at Rutgers University SHI Stadium. This was another close game for Winslow as there were six lead changes over the course of the game.
Quayd Hendryx dominated this game with three touchdowns starting the game off right with an 88 yard receiving touchdown and then getting a 87 yard punt return touchdown to give Winslow the lead after a Ramapo rushing score. In the 3rd quarter Ramapo went up 14-12 as Ramapo QB Casey Grusser got into the endzone with a 1 yard rush, but the Winslow offense immediately responded as Hendryx had a 20 yard house call making the score 18-14 to end the third quarter.
Ramapo would not go away, after some questionable penalties and mistakes by the usually stout Winslow defense, Ramapo running back Liam Hayward scored a seven yard touchdown to give Ramapo the 21-18 lead in the fourth. It was happening again. Winslow was on the ropes for the second game in a row everybody’s question was how they would respond? Spoiler alert…they rose to the occasion. As QB Jaylen Parker scored on a quarterback keeper from 13 yards out giving Winslow a 26-21 lead and after a big defensive stop by Winslow Nakeem Powell which iced the game, making the final score 34-21 to give Winslow back to back state titles.
Quayd Hendryx showed out and Jalen Parker also cemented himself into New Jersey football history breaking the all-time passing touchdowns record as a Junior. This Winslow team faced trials and tribulations along the way with losses vs powerhouses like IMG and Bergen Catholic and also a close games against Brick and Ramapo, but they ultimately got it done. Winslow is officially the king of public NJ high school football and I doubt that stops here.
