“Like a Love Song” is a classic friends to lovers romantic comedy. The book came out in the summer of 2021 and focuses on protagonist Natalie, who has a meltdown at the People’s Choice awards. I chose this book because romantic comedies are comfy reads.
Natalie is a Brazilian pop star who, as the book begins, is with her self-described “super hot actor boyfriend”, Trent Nicholson. He breaks up with her minutes before her award at the People’s Choice awards, so she ends up hiring a fake boyfriend, William, to distract the public from her freak out. Will they end up tougher, or is fake too much for William, who is used to simple living. Could all of this newfound drama be too much to handle?
Overall, the book was strong and the writing style is engaging. The characters develop over time and their relationship is perfect as they come to terms with their feelings. The story moves along at a good pace where it keeps the reader wanting more but not slow enough where the reader gets bored. The story isn’t entirely original as many books center around pop stars, cute guys and the crippling weight of fame. Overall the book was amazing and I would totally recommend it. There were no major weaknesses that I could find in the book.
The theme was to be true to who you really are and to embrace it fully and if you have true supporters, they’re all who really matter.
The narrative voice is smooth and consistent throughout the entire story. The language is simple and easy to understand. The dialogue was engaging and felt casual, like real people talking to each other. There was plenty of suspense, though since it’s a rom com, it might not be the suspense some are looking for.
Teens would enjoy reading a book like this. The book might be impactful if you feel like you’re trying to be something you’re not. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light hearted book.
