On Friday December fifth, students a part of the WTHS Model United Nations club had the opportunity to go to New York City and see the JP Morgan Library and a tour of the United Nations building.
The JP Morgan Library had stunning architecture and artifacts. Students were able to see the first editions of many famous books, such as the manuscript of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, as well as the first known edition of the bible, which looked like it was written on wood.
As well as the books, students were able to see art spanning several time periods throughout history, such as the renaissance and modern art.
Dan Aasa, a senior, said, “I had no idea what to expect, but it managed to subvert all of my expectations. When we first arrived there was immaculate art and architecture from the 1600 – 1800’s based on British, English Literature and it overwhelmed me so much that it gave me a real sense of appreciation for our history and culture.”
They were also able to see the private study of JP Morgan, still with the original furniture and books.
Then there was a tour of the United Nations headquarters, where students were able to see all the different assembly rooms, and learn about the history of them. They were also able to see the harmful effect that weapons have on our environment, and how the United Nations has seen progress in a lot of areas, failure in some, and just ok for others.
Senior Leeya Joseph said, “As someone who is going to study political science it was very relevant for me and it was a great opportunity to see how the United Nations functions in person.”
They were also able to see numerous gifts from other countries.
In all, it was an exciting experience for the students!
